When Goals Turn Toxic

We hear a lot about goal oriented behavior as it relates to achieving success in whatever endeavour the behavior may be applied to. But, is it possible for the resulting goal oriented behavior to actually become toxic and potentially ruin your business? The answer is yes.

When goals are too narrowly focused, ill-aligned with your core identity values, or financially associated, a greater risk exists for behavior to turn toxic and cause harm. A narrow focus would be defined as being something that is too zoomed in on without consideration given to how the goal and results fit into the bigger picture.

Choosing a goal that does not support you in your journey of becoming a person living a life aligned with your core values, then unfavorable behavior will likely result. This could lead to a spiral effect of a negative mindset and potentially move you further away from who you want to be, as opposed to closer.

Financially based goals and incentives are at high risk of leading to unethcial business practices in order to achieve the set sales targets or profit margins. Corruption of an entire institution can often lead back to a seed of unethical behavior relating to a financial function.

Mindfully setting goals and monitoring the effect of their presence with a high amount of consideration, introspection, and proper measurement techniques can provide valuable feedback as to whether resulting behaviors are leading you to or from where you truly want to be.
